Fall 2020 — Professor Doug May
Image Making

American illustrator Richard Lillash’s style is applied to Jules Chéret’s 1890 poster for the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris, France. Lillash uses a unique treatment of overlapping textures and forms to create a cut paper effect.
I generated similar textures he commonly uses, like dot matrices, the surface of paper, and textile patterns by creating bitmaps from scanned found items such as clothing, napkins, or blankets.
The illustration requires an understanding and application of type pairing and illustration techniques, including the generation of custom textures.
